From my many trips to China, I have learned that the Chinese are quite frugal and resourceful. The example I will use today is for a simple kitchen knife. Instead of buying a new one when the old one is showing obvious signs of wear, you take the old knife down to the corner where there is a tradesman that can revitalize the old knife. By the way, the tradesman is using a recycled bicycle to help him do his work!
In the picture above, you can see the well used kitchen knives. Also, you can see some of the tools that will be used to sharpen the knives. The whit stone on the left is one of the largest ones I have ever seen!
In the picture below, you can see the process and the skilled hands at work. I am afraid to think of how many scars my hands would have if this was my profession!
If you recall, I said this worker used a recycled bicycle to help with his work. Well, here it is! I would have never thought about using a bike to spin the wheel that grinds and sharpens the blades! A great idea if you ask me!
Hopefully you enjoyed this small piece of Chinese culture. During you travels, keep your eyes open, because you never know what you might see! I can’t wait for my next trip!
